On Friday, Sept. 4, The Community Foundation of the Texas Hill Country announced that temporary housing assistance is available to flood-affected households in Kerr County and Comfort as the region continues to recover from the July 16 flood.
The Temporary Housing Assistance Program will provide up to three months of assistance for eligible households through a $967,575 grant from the Community Foundation. First Presbyterian Church of Kerrville, which has administered temporary housing assistance in partnership with the Foundation since the July 4, 2025, flood, will administer the program.
“For a family whose home has been damaged or made unlivable, having a safe place to stay provides the stability they need to begin making longer-term decisions,” the Rev. Jasiel Hernandez Garcia, senior pastor of First Presbyterian Church of Kerrville, said. “We are grateful to continue walking alongside families affected by this disaster and helping them take the next steps toward recovery.”
According to the Community Foundation’s Rebuild Kerr Needs Assessment, approximately 120 households reported needing temporary housing assistance following the July 16 flood. The program is one part of the Foundation’s broader recovery efforts, which include funding 36 disaster case managers, providing emergency financial assistance to more than 850 households and awarding $5 million to LiftFund for small-business recovery grants.
“Recovery takes an entire community working together,” Austin Dickson, CEO of the Community Foundation, said. “These are charitable dollars donated by people who wanted to help their neighbors, and our job is to put them to work where they can make a difference. Temporary housing gives families a safe place to live today while case managers help determine what comes next and begin the longer-term work of helping families get home again.”
How to get help
Disaster case managers will contact households that have already completed the Needs Assessment and indicated a housing need. Flood-affected households in Kerr County and Comfort that have not completed an assessment can begin the recovery process by completing the Needs Assessment at RebuildKerr.org.
