Celebrating our 250th year

Kerrville’s Symphony of the Hills will commemorate the country’s 250th birthday with a free concert, flag art display and tribute to flood victims on Saturday, July 4, at the Cailloux Theater. The concert is a non-ticketed event with seating offered on a first-come, first-served basis. The lobby will open at 3 p.m., and the concert begins at 4 p.m.

Guest dignitaries have been invited to participate in the “Stars, Stripes and Spirit” concert, according to symphony conductor and artistic director Eugene Dowdy.

“The symphony concert celebrates our nation’s semiquincentennial and remembers the tragedy and heroic responses in our community,” Dowdy said. “Special guest participation in the concert will include a musical selection where names of the 119 who perished in Kerr County will be read.”

Prior to the concert, the public will be able to view nine original paintings of historic American flags by artist Robert R. “Bobby” Cahill. His “Freedom” series highlights the changes the flag has gone through since 1776 tied to historical events.

The music program for Saturday’s event includes:

• “Fanfare for the Common Man,” by Aaron Copland

• “God Bless America,” by Irving Berlin, arrangement by Bruce Healey; featuring Sarah Davis, soprano

• “American Salute,” by Morton Gould

• “A Texas State of Mind,” by Joe Stuessy

• “Lincoln Portrait,” by Aaron Copland, with Kerrville Mayor Joe Herring Jr. as narrator

• “Daughters of the American Revolution,” by J. Bodewalt Lampe
