Breakthrough Hits and Milestones

These breakthrough hits and milestones occurred on Aug. 17:

  • 2001: For the Girls’ Night Out Tour, Reba McEntire, Sara Evans, Jamie O’Neal, Carolyn Dawn Johnson, and Martina McBride performed at the LJVM Coliseum in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. This tour was the only time these five stars came together as a group.
  • 2017: Superstars Reba McEntire and Brooks & Dunn teamed up for their Reba, Brooks & Dunn: Together in Vegas residency. They added extra dates, including Aug. 17, due to the artists’ popularity.
  • 2019: George Strait, Blake Shelton, Cody Johnson, and Caitlyn Smith performed at the Gillette Stadium in Massachusetts. Strait sang several of his songs, such as “All My Ex’s Live in Texas,” and he covered Rodney Crowell’s “Stars on the Water” and Terry Stafford’s “Amarillo by Morning.”

  • 2021: The generous Darius Rucker hosted his annual fundraiser concert, Darius & Friends, at the Ryman Auditorium in Nashville. This sold-out benefit concert raised over $410,000 for the St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital in Nashville.
  • 2025: Dolly: An Original Musical took place at the Fisher Center for the Performing Arts at Belmont University in Nashville. Parton wrote some new songs for the performers, and they also sang classics from Parton’s long career.
  • 2025: Miranda Lambert and Parker McCollum’s Band Together Texas benefit, held at the Moody Center in Austin, Texas, was streamed across social media channels on this date. Proceeds from this concert went to the Central Texas flood recovery efforts benefiting the Community Foundation of the Texas Hill Country and the Central Texas Community Foundation. Other notable performers at this show included Lyle Lovett, Ronnie Dunn, the Randy Rogers Band, and Lukas Nelson.

  • 2023: Eric Church played at The Wharf Amphitheater in Orange Beach, Alabama. He had special guests Lainey Wilson and Jackson Dean at this show. This show was part of The Wharf Amphitheater’s C-Spire Concert Series and Church’s Outsiders Revival Tour.
  • 2024: Fans in Canada enjoyed the Country Thunder Alberta festival and saw exciting performances by HARDY, Elle King, ERNEST, and Lonestar.
  • 2025: Cody Jinks performed at the Empower Federal Credit Union Amphitheater at Lakeview in Syracuse, New York. Tanner Usrey opened for Jinks for his Hippies & Cowboys Tour.
  • 2025: On the final day of Country Thunder Alberta, Riley Green, Old Dominion, and Clint Black headlined. Owen Riegling, Nolan Compton, and Amy Hef also played at this annual music festival.

Industry Changes and Challenges

Many industry challenges happened on Aug. 17, including:

  • 2016: At a show in Virginia Beach, a storm with 75 mph winds threatened an Old Dominion show. Even though there was a power outage and some gear was destroyed, the group did not want to disappoint fans, so they performed an acoustic show.
  • 2018: The Turnpike Troubadours frontman, Evan Felker, finalized his divorce from Staci Nelson. Felker had been dating Miranda Lambert before the divorce was finalized, but the couple soon broke up.
  • 2019: Willie Nelson had to cancel his show in Greensboro, North Carolina, due to breathing issues. He also canceled five other Aug. shows he was performing with Allison Krauss but resumed touring in Sept.
